National Defense University

MERLN — Military Education Research Library Network (merln.ndu.edu)

The MERLN digital archive (digitalndulibrary.ndu.edu) contains a collection of 24 MiPALs (Military Policy Awareness Links) that are research guides to hot topics/government policy statements on Iraq selected from sites such as DoD, State Department, the White House, etc. in support of NDU graduate-level and public research. This includes a comprehensive collection of White House statements from 2001 to the present regarding US involvement in Iraq, all of the US national strategies from summer of 2002 to the present, and policy statements and reports regarding the creation of the Office of Homeland Security and DHS.

Each MiPAL originally linked out to the native sites, but now in the interest of preservation the original web pages have been collected and archived in a CONTENTdm system. Metadata has been applied and full-text searching of statements, transcripts, reports, fact sheets and op-eds is possible.

Although other organizations such as the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the GPO archive government docs, MERLN provides (and preserves) a selected collection of government documents that focus on US policy statements on Iraq from 2002 to the present.

Information presented here is compiled from the CiL2009 presentation by NDU’s Trisha E. Bachman and Julie Arrighetti and from the digitalndulibrary.ndu.edu site

Jan Johansson, Data Librarian at the Congressional Research Service, mentioned several interesting data visualization tools today. He was a co-speaker it the Next Generation Digital Reference Tools session this morning.

Many Eyes
Many Eyes is a place where you can visualize, share, and otherwise understand/communicate with data visually. This is a project from IBM’s Collaborative User Experience research group.

Google Gadgets
Google visualization tools are part of the Google docs suite. Look for spreadsheets and animated charting.

For those interested, the Tuesday morning keynote speech from the Computers in Libraries conference will be available live online.

Link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cillive

Description:

OPENING KEYNOTE — KEYNOTE:
Library Without Walls: Meeting Place of and for People!

9:00 AM – 9:45 AM
Paul Holdengraber , Director, Public Programs, New York Public Library
Erik Boekesteijn , Concept Developer and Projectmanager, Science and Innovation department, Delft Public Library ShanachieTour

As the founder, curator, and voice of “LIVE from the NYPL,” an innovative series of public talks, debates, performances, it is Holdengraber’s responsibility to “think up programs that will stimulate intellectual fervor, inspire discussion and dissent, and create forums to bring books and people together.” He defines what he does in two words: “cognitive theater!” He has interviewed, moderated or, as he prefers to say, instigated—conversations with writers, artists, world leaders, humorists, cooks, psychoanalysts, and filmmakers from around the globe. In a passionate and engaging interview Erik Boekesteijn will goad Paul Holdengraber and have him reveal why he believes that public conversations are one fundamental way to make libraries irresistible to ensure their everlasting importance for the future.

(reposted from William’s email to library staff. Thanks, William!)
